Fixing Dry Winter Skin | Makeup

Last week I posted about the skincare I used to fix my dry, flakey winter skin. Click here to have a read if you haven’t already! While skincare tends to be the main thing we think of when it comes to skin ‘problems’ such as dryness or oiliness, I made a few changes to my makeup routine too. This particularly helped to reduce how flakey my skin became every time I applied my base makeup – gross but true!

The Sponge
Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge – this was the game-changer for my skin. Sadly, while I love using my buffing brushes, changing to a sponge was the only way I could apply my foundation and not have it look horrendously patchy and flakey. (How many times can I say ‘flakey’ in one blog post?!) I might do a separate, more in-depth review of this sponge if people are interested?

Moisturising Primers
The Body Shop Skin Primer Moisture It – admittedly this is a newer addition to my makeup stash but it is worth including nonetheless. This primer feels almost like a gel and has a lovely cooling and hydrating feel when applied.

L’Oreal Lumi Magique Primer – if you want to look dewy and glowy then you need this primer in your life! It has quite a different texture to the body shop primer, it isn't cooling or gel like but rather has a very runny consistency. Once applied it gives a very subtle glow to the skin which looks stunning on its own or under foundation.

Onto Foundation…
L’Oreal Lumi Magique Foundation – this, along with the primer, was raved about by Jaclyn Hill in her dewy skin tutorials so I had to give it a try! While my skin was so dry, lighter coverage foundations were preferable as they didn't cling to dry patches as much and I didn't want anything too heavy on my skin. This is a lovely foundation but I usually mix it with Mac’s face and body to sheer it out a bit – the two together give a gorgeous dewy finish.

Mac Face and Body Foundation – I tried a sample of this foundation years ago and just didn't get it – it has such a runny consistency and gives the sheerest coverage that I just didn't understand the hype. However when I was offered two free Mac products (click here to find out why!) I thought I would give it another go and I haven’t looked back since. I might do a full review/tutorial of how I use this foundation but let me tell you, if you have dry skin I would definitely recommend it. I believe it is water-based (correct me if I’m wrong!) and the texture is beautiful on the skin. It looks gorgeous and, yep you guessed it, dewy when not set with a powder and it is fabulous for sheering out other foundations as mentioned above!

And now to set it all in place…
Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray – This stupidly isn't pictured but is a great alternative to powder and I had to quickly mention it. Powder was 100% a no-no with my horrendously dry skin so when I won this in a Cohorted giveaway I couldn't be happier. It sets my makeup in place without weighing it down or taking away the dewy look I've worked so hard to achieve, as well as aiding the longevity of my makeup, so I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking to try setting sprays.

Have you tried any of the products mentioned in this post? What is your dry-skin makeup routine?

    1. Using the sponge made the biggest difference for me in terms of flakiness - so I'd definitely recommend that if your skin ever gets like that again! xx
